What To Expect (Job Responsibilities)
Assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes and DRGs for inpatient and outpatient medical records
Abstract key data elements required for billing
Review records for clinical pertinence
Interact with providers for clarification of documentation/education
Maintain CE credits in accordance with AHIMA requirements
What Is Required (Qualifications)
Associate or bachelor’s degree
Certification as RHIT, RHIA, or CCS
Thorough working knowledge of ICD-10CM/PCS, CPT coding systems, and DRG systems
Working knowledge of hospital information systems, electronic medical records, and encoder
Working knowledge of medical-legal rules and regulations
How To Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)
0-2 years of experience in a similar role
Strong interpersonal skills
Proficiency in medical terminology
Experience with EMR systems
